I pity those who don't read.
To them, books are just paper
Marked with ink all over.
To them, books seem so boring
Silent and still with nothing to offer.

And they ask me,
Why do you read?
Why do you laugh?
Why do you cry?
What do you see in those pages?

I reply, "Because it's enjoyable"
And they laugh and wave me away.
But if they could see what I see
And feel what I feel,
Would they be laughing then?

Would they laugh?
When the evil overlord falls
struck down by the heroes
Head tumbling down the stairs?
Or would they cheer?

Would they laugh?
When the old mentor passes
A smile upon his face
Having passed his knowledge to disciples?
Or would they shed tears?

This is the magic of books
Books are capable of making you feel
Sadness, anger, happiness,
Sorrow, frustration, joy
And hope.

They can transport you to times and places
Places you've never been or have never existed
Times of knights and kings
Times of sorcery and magic
Times of flying cars and lasers.

They can make you see through the eyes of others
To live as another person.
A mighty warrior, laughing in the face of death
A wise wizard, weaving his powerful magicks
A runaway, sleeping rough and eating scraps.

This is the magic of books
The magic of beauty and excitement
The magic of sorrow and anguish
It is a magic for all to share
You just have to read.
“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only one.” - George R.R. Martin, A Dance With Dragons

These days, people don't read anymore. Reading is now considered "lame", "boring" and "uncool". When did that happen? Why have people stopped reading? Why have they stopped encouraging others to read?

There were four different bookstore over here. Two of them closed down, and a third switched to stocking mainly school material, only having the really popular books (like Twilight and 50 Shades... ick). All this because people aren't reading anymore. WHY?!

I should be able to read a 1000 page book in public without getting funny looks. I should be able to go to a bookstore and find any book I'm looking for. I should be able to walk up to the counter with ten books in my arms, half of them books I didn't even realize I wanted until I stepped in. I should be able to do all these things, so lets get to it, okay?

.. I fully feel you. I dunno why it boils my blood whenever I see people not reading.

Now I wanna read more than ever, but time keeps slipping away...

I remember the time when we had a school outing and I had three books with me. The older kids wouldn't stop making fun of me for that. :/ It's just sad that very few people enjoy reading and having adventures nowadays.

Well-written and wonderful are words that I would use to describe this but I'm afraid they wouldn't do justice.

Keep up the great work, SLS. :)

Totally and completely agree!!! I've read so much! It's just so much fun!

Hee, I've actually gotten in trouble for reading so much. you? I got banned from reading in school for two weeks even though I had great grades with my books.

I've gotten into trouble so many times >.< Eventually though, my teachers left me alone because I wasn't disrupting class, my grades were okay, and it was an all-boys school, so the teachers had far bigger problems than someone reading in class =P

This is exactly how I feel; I am a huge reader myself and I try so hard to convince my friends to read beyond mainstream but it's hard these days. I worry that we writers are going to have to fight harder to get our works noticed. I really like the way you made this :)
